The Department of Ophthalmic Technology, established in 1984, is one of the leading centers in India for Optometry and Ophthalmic Assistant training. With a strong legacy of excellence, the department has consistently upgraded its curriculum to match advancements in eye-care technology and industry requirements.
In 2017, the department expanded its vision-care education by introducing the B.Voc. in Optometry program under the Center for Vocational and Technical Education, Premlila Vithaldas Polytechnic, SNDT Womenβs University. This program was launched to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in vision care and primary eye care.
Today, the department offers both a 3-year Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology and a 4-year B.Voc. in Optometry, with lateral entry options. Through a blend of academic training, hands-on clinical exposure, and a skill-developmentβbased curriculum, the department prepares students to become industry-ready optometry professionals and competent primary eye care practitioners.

Dr. (Mrs.) Nita M. Jarmarwala
Head, Department of Optometry
It gives me immense pride to lead the Department of Optometry, a department that has grown into a trusted center of excellence in vision-care education. Since its establishment, our department has been dedicated to shaping competent, compassionate, and skilled eye-care professionals who contribute meaningfully to society.
Optometry is often described as the "science that gives sight to life. For us, it is more than a profession-it is a service, a responsibility, and a commitment to improving the quality of vision and the quality of living; guided by this philosophy, our department continues to nurture students with strong academic knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and values that make them true ambassadors of eye health.
We offer two dynamic programs:
Both programs are designed to meet the evolving needs of the optical and healthcare sectors, supported by experienced faculty, modern laboratories, and extensive clinical exposure.
Under my stewardship, the department remains committed to excellence, innovation, and student-centric learning. Our mission is not only to produce skilled optometrists but to inspire future leaders who will uplift the standards of vision care across the nation.
I warmly welcome all aspiring students to join us and become part of a journey where knowledge meets compassion and where education transforms into service.
