The Tata Department of Food Technology, established in 1978, is one of the pioneering and leading departments at Premlila Vithaldas Polytechnic. Over the years, it has built a strong reputation for training and empowering women with comprehensive technical and practical skills in food science, food processing, and quality assurance. The department follows an industry-oriented curriculum supported by fully equipped laboratories in Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Processing, and Bakery Technology.The department is a Training Partner of FICSI (Food Industry Sector Skills Council) and provides dual certification through NSQF Level examination
In 2017, the SNDT Womenβs University established the Centre for Vocational & Technical Education (CVTE). Under this initiative, the department launched the B.Voc. in Food Processing Technology from the academic year 2018β19. This degree program aims to provide a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills, aligned with NSQF levels to enhance student employability and meet evolving industry demands. Students receive extensive training in Food Processing, Sensory Evaluation, Food Analysis, Food Microbiology, and other key subjects, preparing them for roles in Production, Quality Control, Product Development, Food Safety, Hygiene Management, Engineering applications, and various commercial aspects of the food industry.
The department also conducts a range of Entrepreneurship Development Programs (EDP) and Vocational Training Programs (VTP) to support aspiring entrepreneurs in the food processing sector. As part of its social responsibility initiatives, the department has organized workshops for students with learning disabilities, transgender communities, and has launched nutrition awareness activities for cross section of society through the Eat Right Campaign. Additionally, skill-based courses have been delivered under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and the Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (MCED) for school and college dropouts and entrepreneur.
Throughout their academic journey, students gain a complete understanding of the world of foodβfrom raw materials and ingredients to processing, packaging, and the creation of final consumer products. As future food technologists, students are equipped to contribute meaningfully toward making food healthier, safer, and more innovative.
